Blood Sugar Basics: What Blood Glucose Is and What the Ranges Mean

Quick answer

Blood sugar basics start with one fact: blood glucose is the sugar carried in your blood, and insulin helps move it into your cells. Doctors read it with blood tests, such as an A1C below 5.7% or a fasting level of 99 mg/dL or less. Only blood tests diagnose diabetes, and a supplement is no substitute for care.

The basics01

What is blood glucose?

Blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is the sugar that travels in your blood and feeds your cells. You get it from food, and your body also makes some.

Insulin is the hormone that lets glucose move from the blood into cells. Diabetes means blood glucose runs too high, because the body makes too little insulin or cannot use it well (NIDDK, What Is Diabetes?).

Type 2 is the most common form, at about 90% to 95% of cases (NIDDK, What Is Diabetes?). Prediabetes means levels are higher than normal but below the diabetes line.

01

Food in

Starch and sugar break down into glucose, which enters the blood after a meal.

02

Insulin signals

Insulin helps cells take the glucose in, so the level in the blood settles.

03

Cells use it

Muscle, brain and organs burn glucose for energy or store some for later.

The numbers02

What is a normal blood sugar range?

A normal blood sugar range depends on the test. NIDDK lists an A1C below 5.7% and a fasting glucose of 99 mg/dL or less as normal (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

Prediabetes sits between normal and diabetes. A second test on another day is usually used to confirm a diabetes result.

Diagnosis ranges listed by NIDDK (adults, not in pregnancy)
TestNormalPrediabetesDiabetes
A1CBelow 5.7%5.7% to 6.4%6.5% or above
Fasting glucose99 mg/dL or below100 to 125 mg/dL126 mg/dL or above
2-hour glucose tolerance test139 mg/dL or below140 to 199 mg/dL200 mg/dL or above

A random reading of 200 mg/dL or above counts only when symptoms are present. At the other end, 70 mg/dL or lower is considered low (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia).

The test03

How does a blood glucose test work?

A blood glucose test measures the sugar in a small blood sample drawn by a clinician. Which test you get depends on the question your doctor is asking.

The A1C reflects an average of about three months and needs no fasting (CDC, A1C Test for Diabetes and Prediabetes). A fasting test needs a stretch without food first. The tolerance test checks levels two hours after a sugary drink.

  1. Ask which test

A1C, fasting glucose or a tolerance test each answer a slightly different question.

  2. Follow the prep

Ask the lab whether to fast, and tell them about every medicine and supplement.

  3. Get the number and the plan

Ask what the result means for you, and when to test again. NIDDK says normal results are usually retested every 3 years and prediabetes yearly (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

Readings from a home meter are a different tool. We found no source that tells readers how to set targets, so ask your care team for yours. Read more in A1C basics.

Daily life04

What moves blood sugar during the day?

Meals, activity, sleep, stress, illness and medicine all move blood sugar during the day. No single food, drop or capsule sets it.

Low blood sugar has one common cause: diabetes medicines (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia). That is why changes to medicine belong to your prescriber alone.

The six habits below come up again and again in public health advice. They are habits, not a fix.

  • See a doctor about symptomsThirst, frequent urination, tiredness or blurred vision can have causes that only a blood test can sort out. (Mayo Clinic, Type 2 diabetes) (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis)
  • Tell them about every supplementADA and NCCIH advise telling your health care team about every supplement, herb and vitamin. (ADA, Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements (diabetes.org)) (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements)
  • Keep taking prescribed medicineMedlinePlus says to continue metformin even if you feel well. Never stop diabetes medicine because of a supplement. (MedlinePlus, Metformin)
  • Know your numbersA1C and fasting glucose from a lab are how doctors diagnose; the cutoffs are published by NIDDK and CDC. (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis) (CDC, A1C Test for Diabetes and Prediabetes)
  • Keep activity and meals in the planLifestyle change is the first-line plan for prediabetes in Mayo Clinic's pages; a supplement is not a replacement. (Mayo Clinic, Prediabetes)
  • Check blood pressure tooLicorice compounds and caffeine can raise blood pressure, so keep up your regular checks. (MSK, Licorice (About Herbs)) (MedlinePlus, Caffeine)

When to act05

Which blood sugar signs need a doctor?

Thirst, frequent urination, tiredness and blurred vision are reasons to book a visit. They are not a diagnosis, because only blood tests diagnose diabetes and prediabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

Type 2 diabetes can grow slowly and go unnoticed for years (Mayo Clinic, Type 2 diabetes). Keep taking any prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor and pharmacist about every supplement (MedlinePlus, Metformin).

Severe low blood sugar, fainting or a seizure is an emergency. Call 911 (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia).

  1. See a doctor soonIncreased thirst, frequent urination, unusual tiredness, blurred vision, or repeated shakiness after meals.
  2. See a doctor the same dayReadings of 70 mg/dL or lower more than once, or low-sugar signs that keep coming back.
  3. Stop and call your doctorA racing or uneven heartbeat, new swelling, severe headache, yellow skin or eyes, or dark urine after starting any supplement.
  4. Emergency room or 911Fainting, a seizure, severe confusion, trouble breathing, or low blood sugar that does not come up after treatment.

Signs drawn from public health and clinic sources (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia) (MedlinePlus, Low blood sugar) (LiverTox, Green Tea). This list is not complete, and a supplement is never a reason to wait.

The product06

Where does Glyco Reset fit in blood sugar basics?

Glyco Reset is a dietary supplement sold as liquid drops, and it sits outside the basics above. It is not a medicine and not a test.

The label lists chromium (as chromium picolinate) at 0.7 mcg and a 200 mg blend of 21 names, with no split printed. No study tested the bottle. NIH describes chromium trials that used 1,000 mcg a day, many times more than a dropper holds, and calls later results inconsistent (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet for professionals).

Food, activity, medicine and checkups come first. See the full label and how to check medicines before adding anything.

Next step07

What should you ask at your next checkup?

Bring a short list of questions to your next checkup. Clear questions get clear numbers and a clear plan.

  • Which test do I need, and how often?
  • What are my numbers, and what range should I aim for?
  • Do my medicines or supplements change what I should test?
  • Which symptoms mean I should call you the same day?

FAQ08

Blood sugar basics questions

What is blood glucose?

Blood glucose is the sugar carried in your blood that cells use for energy. Insulin helps move it into cells. When levels stay too high, a doctor may diagnose diabetes, and only a blood test can do that.

What is a normal fasting blood sugar level?

NIDDK lists 99 mg/dL or below as normal, 100 to 125 mg/dL as prediabetes and 126 mg/dL or above as diabetes. A second test on another day is usually used to confirm a result.

What blood sugar number counts as low?

A reading of 70 mg/dL or lower is considered low. Shakiness, sweating, a fast heartbeat or confusion can go with it. Severe low blood sugar, fainting or a seizure is an emergency, so call 911.

Does a blood glucose test need fasting?

A fasting glucose test does. The A1C does not, according to the CDC. Ask your lab before the draw, since the right prep depends on the test, and tell them about every medicine and supplement you take.

Can you tell your blood sugar from how you feel?

Not reliably. Thirst, tiredness and blurred vision are reasons to see a doctor, but feelings are not a diagnosis. Type 2 diabetes can go unnoticed for years, so blood tests are the only way to know.

How often should blood sugar be tested?

NIDDK says normal results are usually retested every 3 years and prediabetes results yearly. Your doctor may test more often if you have risk factors or take diabetes medicine, so ask for your own schedule.

Does Glyco Reset change blood sugar?

No source we read tests Glyco Reset, so no one can say. It is a dietary supplement, not a diabetes medicine. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding it.
