Prediabetes: Symptoms, Blood Tests and What to Ask Your Doctor

Quick answer

Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. The CDC says about 98 million U.S. adults have it and over 80% do not know. It often has no clear symptoms, so a prediabetes blood test, such as an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, is the only way to find out.

The condition01

What is prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a state where blood sugar runs higher than normal but stays below the line for diabetes. It raises the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease (NIDDK, What Is Diabetes?).

It is common. The CDC says about 98 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and over 80% of them do not know it (CDC, About the Prediabetes Risk Test). NIDDK, using 2019 data, gives 96 million adults (NIDDK, What Is Diabetes?). The two figures come from different years.

The word is a signal, not a sentence. Your doctor can explain what your own numbers mean and what the next step is.

The signs02

What are the symptoms of prediabetes?

Prediabetes often has no clear symptoms. Mayo Clinic says so plainly, which is why so many people never hear about it until a routine test (Mayo Clinic, Prediabetes).

When blood sugar climbs further, signs of type 2 diabetes can appear: thirst, frequent urination, tiredness and blurred vision. They can build slowly and go unnoticed for years (Mayo Clinic, Type 2 diabetes). None of them is a diagnosis.

Often

No signs at all

Most people with prediabetes feel normal. A feeling is not a reliable guide.

Possible

Thirst, urination, fatigue

These can mean higher blood sugar, or something else. A blood test sorts it out.

The tests03

Which blood test finds prediabetes?

A prediabetes blood test measures A1C, fasting glucose or glucose two hours after a sugary drink. Only a blood test can say you have prediabetes (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

A risk quiz is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. The CDC says only a blood test gives an official answer (CDC, About the Prediabetes Risk Test).

Prediabetes ranges listed by NIDDK
TestPrediabetes rangeDiabetes line
A1C5.7% to 6.4%6.5% or above
Fasting glucose100 to 125 mg/dL126 mg/dL or above
2-hour glucose tolerance test140 to 199 mg/dL200 mg/dL or above

NIDDK says people with prediabetes are usually tested yearly (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis). Read how the percentage works in A1C basics.

The mechanism04

What is insulin resistance?

Insulin resistance means the body's cells respond less well to insulin. The pancreas may then make more insulin to move the same sugar.

It is often described as part of the path toward type 2 diabetes. We found no source that gives a home test for it, and this guide does not claim any food or drop changes it.

One sentence from NIH matters here. The FDA allows only a qualified claim linking chromium picolinate to insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, and calls the link highly uncertain (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet for professionals).

Ask, do not guess

If you worry about insulin resistance, ask your doctor which tests make sense. Do not use a supplement as a stand-in for that answer.

The plan05

What should you do about prediabetes?

See a doctor, get the right blood test, and ask for a plan that fits you. The plan often centers on food, activity and follow-up testing.

  1. Get tested

Ask for an A1C or fasting glucose test, especially with risk factors.

  2. Ask for the plan

Ask what your numbers mean and how often to repeat the test.

  3. Mind your medicines

Keep taking any prescribed medicine, and name every supplement to your doctor and pharmacist (MedlinePlus, Metformin).

  4. Retest on time

Prediabetes is usually tested yearly (NIDDK, Diabetes Tests & Diagnosis).

Severe low blood sugar, fainting or a seizure is an emergency, so call 911 (Mayo Clinic, Hypoglycemia). See also the blood sugar basics.

Supplements06

Do supplements help prediabetes?

No supplement is proven to treat prediabetes. The American Diabetes Association says supplements have not been proven as an effective option for blood glucose (ADA, Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements (diabetes.org)).

NCCIH says the few supplements studied for blood sugar, such as chromium, cinnamon and berberine, show small and inconsistent results (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). It also warns against replacing medical treatment with an unproven product.

The FDA has warned about products sold as diabetes treatments (FDA, Illegally Sold Diabetes Treatments). A good label for any supplement is plain: no promise to fix or prevent a disease.

The product07

Where does Glyco Reset fit with prediabetes?

Glyco Reset is a dietary supplement sold as drops, and it is not a prediabetes treatment. No study tested it.

The label lists chromium at 0.7 mcg and a 200 mg blend of 21 names with no split. The bars show the gap between the label and the amounts used in studies of three ingredients. They are not a dose guide.

  1. The comparison. NIH describes a 1997 trial of 1,000 mcg a day of chromium picolinate in adults with type 2 diabetes. The Adequate Intake is 20 to 35 mcg. (NIH ODS, Chromium fact sheet for professionals)

Read it with care. The studied amount comes from a different product, group and time span. It is not a recommended or effective dose, and no trial tested Glyco Reset.

  2. The comparison. LiverTox gives a typical gymnema supplement amount of 400 mg three times daily. The label's 200 mg is shared by twenty-one names. (LiverTox, Gymnema)

Read it with care. The studied amount comes from a different product, group and time span. It is not a recommended or effective dose, and no trial tested Glyco Reset.

  3. The comparison. LiverTox describes liver injury cases at about 800 mg to 1.8 g of extract a day. The whole blend is 200 mg. (LiverTox, Green Tea)

Read it with care. The studied amount comes from a different product, group and time span. It is not a recommended or effective dose, and no trial tested Glyco Reset.

Each full bar is the daily amount used in the one study or reference we cite. The filled part is the most the label could give per dropper: the whole 200 mg blend is shared by 21 names, so any one plant is a fraction of that. The label also does not say whether each name is a powder or an extract, so even this comparison is rough.

See the ingredient list before you decide, and keep your doctor in the loop.

FAQ08

Prediabetes questions

How common is prediabetes?

The CDC says about 98 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and over 80% do not know it. NIDDK, using 2019 data, gives 96 million adults. The figures come from different years, so quote each with its date.

Does prediabetes always have symptoms?

No. Mayo Clinic says it often has no clear symptoms. If thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or blurred vision appear, see a doctor. Those signs are not a diagnosis, and only a blood test can find prediabetes.

What A1C means prediabetes?

An A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% falls in the prediabetes range. Below 5.7% is normal, and 6.5% or above is diabetes. A second test is usually used to confirm, and only a doctor can diagnose.

What fasting glucose means prediabetes?

NIDDK lists 100 to 125 mg/dL as the prediabetes range for a fasting test. A level of 99 mg/dL or below is normal, and 126 mg/dL or above points to diabetes. A second test is usually used to confirm.

Is insulin resistance the same as prediabetes?

No. Insulin resistance describes cells responding less well to insulin. Prediabetes is a blood test result. They are related, but we found no home test for insulin resistance, so ask your doctor what testing fits.

How often should you test if you have prediabetes?

NIDDK says prediabetes is usually tested yearly. Your doctor may choose a different schedule based on your numbers and risk factors, so ask for the date of your next test before you leave the visit.

Can Glyco Reset treat prediabetes?

No. Glyco Reset is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and no study tested it. Only your doctor can guide prediabetes care. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement to your routine.
